unashamed attepmt to get comments Parachute Competition

As I mentioned in my last post, The headline acts for Parachute 2005 will be announced on september 20.

Accordingly, I thought I would get line up ideas from anyone who wishes to share.

I'm asking for five artists (New Zealand and International) that you would suggest as headliners for parachute 05. If you're feeling super spiritual you might like to suggest a speaker too (not one of your five).

The five should try to include at least one Hip hop/Rap/ Urban style artist, at least one artist your 13 year old sister would like if she was told to, and at least one frenzied mosh pit act.

In the first week of term I will give chocolate to the person who suggests what I deem "the best" line up and to the person who suggests what I deem "the funniest" suggested lineup... Get creative.

Also, when the real lineup is announced, there will be more chocolate for anyone who picked it.

You may enter more than once, but you may not use any of the same artists in two entries by the same person.
You may use artists that other people have suggested, as long as your total line up is not the same.

I look forward to seeing some ideas, to get the chocolate you will need to be able to arrange to meet me at uni during the first week of term, but if you can't- you can still give your suggestions.

Music News and Stuff

Star in someone elses very own music video
4 Man bob are filming a vid tomorrow night, check their website (4manbob.com) or the music section of todays press to find out how you can be in it.

What's he dippidy doin?
That's right, adult contempory pop artist Reuben D Rusk has finally started recording his songs for his 3 albums he has planned. So far he's only done one, and it will be good when he starts another to hear a different 4 bars eminating from his room for ohours on end.

Angry Boy Music
Grrr, Far flung Island in the pacific, we miss out on lots of good concerts. Pillar and Project 86 are touring the States together from September 21 trhought to novemeber sometime. Kinda funny thought that project are opening for pillar, when I've been following project for a lot longer.

However
September 20. Mark that date, etch it in to your brain. It's the date the headline acts for parachute 2005 will be announced. See my next post for a competition related to that.

Samstock
Also in september (24-26) is the South Islands premiere Christian Music festival in the village of Mosgiel. Confirmed that I know of are Moped (Reggae Rock), Falter (Last year's rockquest champs) Straightline (drummer form late 80's mercedes acoustic funk band), Zebulun (nu-metal angry stuff) and disarm (if you're reading this you've probably met them) $25 bucks if you book this month, otherwise $39. Go to samstock.org.nz and have a look. They even have optional cabins this year!!!!!

Emo

Christian Music in Canta

Churndog is writing an article about Christian Music for our esteemed supply of free wrapping paper and fire starter and approached me as a Christian Music fan for some comments and ideas. I thought seeing as I was typing them up for him, I would paste them here as well for anyone interested:

"I think people have a lot more choice in whether they like a song than they give themselves credit for.
For example, when I was in fourth form, I really thought "Everybody" by the Backstreet Boys sucked, then a friend said he really liked it. It made me reconsider, and I even bought their "as long as you love me" cassingle. (yes, I know I shouldn't make that public)

Music is really subjective, I'm into Christian music because I choose to like it. That said, I don't like all christian music simply because it's by Christians. I have a penchant towards harder and heavier stuff rather than cheesy pop. But some of the heavy stuff is not up to scratch with the others, and occasionally there's some really good cheesy pop, that for some reason I will decide I like. I'm not really into hip hop, but I really dig John Reuben.

Likewise, I do not think music sucks simply because it is not from a christian perspective . A lot of it is very good, and I will enjoy listening to it at friend's places, watch music videos on c4 (and change the channel during the dodgy ones) and keep an eye on music news in the paper and magazines. However, If I genuinely believe in God and want him to be first in my life, then surely he should be more important to me than my cd collection and influence my taste in music.

Besides, as a student you have to be selective in what music you by, becaues you can't afford everything, and I like to obtain my music legally (self righteous christian gimp showing through here--maybe you shouldn't quote the last part of this sentance, but you can if you like)

To someone who likes music as much as I do, the music we listen to is a big part of defining our identity, and we can choose what to include in that identity and what to leave out. I suppose this is where prejudice against Christian music can make an impact- People may think it is uncool to like Christian music. To a large extent they are probably right, not because of anything wrong with the music, but because coolness is based on individual and public perceptions and opinions, not on impartial reviews of the music quality. I think this is probably also why so many artists who are Christian don't like to be labelled as making Christian music.

As for me, I am a Christian music fan, A Christian who is a fan of music, and a fan of Christian music."

various news and stuff

Unashamed advertising
I noticed Superstore still have some copies of the Audio adrenaline Worldwide album with free live DVD left. The cds not bad, and if you like audio a, the dvd is darn good. You get both for the price of just the cd, so it's a pretty sweet deal.

See spot rock
I bought this tour dvd the other day. Very funny, but a little dissapointing how little live footage there is, It's mostly the bands (pillar, supertones, relient k, sanctus real and john reuben) being interviewed and being silly! It does have music videos on it too, but I already had all of them except for the one from sanctus real. Never really listened to them much, but it's quite good-- I'll have to keep an eye on them.

Four man Bob, with ample cleavage
At Zebedees this sat (28 August). Won't be there myself as I will be heading up to the North Island.

Rumor has it
Supertones will be doing a five iron song on their next album. See
http://www.jesusfreakhideout.com/news/ for that and other interesting news.

Welcome

For those of you who are not aware, saponification started as the culmination of several late night discusisons between Brehaut and myself and the evil empire after church in first year.

I went back up to vegas for the summer and got an email from brehaut who had come up with our very first lyrics to our very first song angry. They were "I'm not angry, I'm hust a little bit tense."

From there the monster was born... Three years and no albums later we are still in need of our first real practice.

So, in the mean time, the name has been lent to this blog, which is to serve as a news and reviews site for Christian music, especially serving as a place for me to rant on about where disarm are playing next, and other gigs around Christchurch.
